Elden Ring: Spirit Ashes and Summoning
On this page
The bell works only in marked spaces
Spirit Ashes are allies you call with the Spirit Calling Bell. The bell becomes available early; if you miss the first encounter that offers it, the Twin Maiden Husks can provide it later. Look for the white Rebirth Monument icon on the left of the screen. That icon means the area permits Spirit Ashes. Open the quick item or inventory, use one ash, and pay its FP or HP cost.
Only one Spirit Ash can be active at a time, and you can normally summon only once per encounter. If it dies, rest at a Site of Grace before trying again. Spirits cannot normally be summoned during multiplayer. A failed summon usually means the area does not allow it, the ash’s resource cost is too high, or multiplayer is active. Check those conditions before treating the item as bugged.
Pick the role that changes the fight
Several bodies can split a boss’s attention. A sturdier lone spirit can hold a target briefly, while a ranged ash gives you room to heal or attack from a safer angle. Try a spirit on the same boss more than once before deciding it is weak; its position, enemy aggression, and your own timing matter as much as its name.
Roderika can tune Spirit Ashes at Roundtable Hold after her service becomes available. Standard ashes use Grave Glovewort and renowned ashes use Ghost Glovewort. That upgrade system is separate from weapon stones. Shadow of the Erdtree adds the Revered Spirit Ash Blessing for expansion areas; it is not part of base-game progression. To strengthen your own weapon first, read Weapon Upgrades or return to Getting Started.
Make the summon create a specific opening
Choose an ash by the job the arena needs. A durable ally can briefly split a boss’s attention; several smaller spirits can interrupt a slow enemy; a ranged companion can give you space to heal or set up a cast. Watch what happens in the first minute. If the ash dies before doing its job, improve the ash, change the timing of the summon, or pick a different role. Do not use its distraction as permission to spend all your stamina behind the boss; leave enough room to react when the target turns back.
