Elden Ring Attributes and Soft Caps
On this page
Elden Ring has eight attributes, and every level you buy raises one of them by one point. Each attribute feeds a secondary statistic, so the choice is really about which part of your character you want to grow.
| Attribute | What it raises |
|---|---|
| Vigor | Your maximum health |
| Mind | Your focus points, which pay for spells and skills |
| Endurance | Stamina and how much equipment you can carry |
| Strength | Damage on heavy weapons, and whether you can wield them |
| Dexterity | Damage on fast weapons, and how quickly you cast |
| Intelligence | Sorcery power and intelligence-scaling weapons |
| Faith | Incantation power and faith-scaling weapons |
| Arcane | Status effect buildup on arcane-scaling weapons, and item discovery |
What a soft cap is
Attributes do not give the same return forever. At certain points, each further point adds noticeably less than the last, and those points are called soft caps or breakpoints. Vigor is the clearest example: the health you gain per level rises up to level 40 and then falls away sharply after it. That is why 40 is treated as the first target for Vigour rather than 99.
Strength, dexterity, intelligence, and faith have their own breakpoints, usually further out than Vigour’s, which is why a completed build tends to push one damage attribute into the 50s or 60s rather than spreading evenly.
Two practical consequences
First, two-handing a weapon raises your effective strength by half again for the purposes of wielding it, so a strength requirement you cannot meet one-handed may still be reachable. Raising the actual attribute is what improves damage, though.
Second, Arcane is the odd one out. Its contribution to item discovery keeps rising steadily rather than tapering, and it improves status buildup on weapons that scale with it, which is why bleed and poison builds invest there.
Only the last few points of any attribute are about squeezing out damage. The first twenty are about reaching the requirements that let you use the things you have already found.
