Elden Ring: Great Runes and Remembrances
This page includes story or boss spoilers.

A boss win is only the first step
Major shardbearer victories can give a Great Rune and a Remembrance, but they are separate systems. A Great Rune has to be restored at its matching Divine Tower before it can be equipped at a Site of Grace. Equipping it does not activate its effect. Use a Rune Arc after equipping it, and remember that the benefit lasts until death. Save Rune Arcs for attempts where you understand the fight well enough to use the extra edge.
The matching tower matters. Read the Great Rune description and the map route rather than assuming the nearest tower is correct. A blocked tower path can be a route issue, not a missing menu action. If you cannot restore a Rune yet, keep progressing and return when that route opens; you have not lost the reward.
Do not spend a Remembrance just because it is in the inventory
Remembrances can be exchanged at the Roundtable Hold’s Finger Reader Enia for boss-related rewards, or consumed for runes. The exchange choice is the meaningful decision. Inspect both rewards, their requirements, and whether either would genuinely serve the current build before turning it into currency. Later duplication at Walking Mausoleums can provide another copy for a second reward, but not every mausoleum accepts every Remembrance.
| System | Required action | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Great Rune | Restore it at the appropriate Divine Tower, equip it at a Grace, then use a Rune Arc | Expecting the passive to work straight after a boss kill. |
| Remembrance | Compare Enia’s reward choices before consuming it | Spending it for runes before knowing whether its weapon, spell, or Ash fits the build. |
| Mausoleum | Bring the chosen Remembrance to a compatible mausoleum | Assuming every walking mausoleum duplicates every boss reward. |
This page intentionally does not list a “best” Great Rune or reward. Their value depends on your attributes, weapon plan, and whether you can keep a Rune Arc active through the fight ahead. It covers the base game and does not treat DLC bosses or their rewards as part of this route. Use Weapon Upgrades when the reward decision is really about whether you can support a new weapon.
