Elden Ring: Sorcery and Incantations Basics
On this page
A spell is a package, not just an Intelligence or Faith number
Sorceries are cast with staves and commonly ask for Intelligence. Incantations are cast with Sacred Seals and often ask for Faith, sometimes alongside another attribute. Read every requirement before buying or reinforcing a focus. Then check the spell’s FP cost, casting speed, range, and whether you can safely use it in the fight you actually have next.
Memory Stones expand the number of spell slots available at a Site of Grace. That makes a compact loadout more useful than filling every slot with spells that compete for the same short opening. Carry one dependable ranged option, one close or quick option if the build needs it, and a utility spell you know how to use. The rest can wait until the encounter asks for it.
Match the focus to the plan
Reinforcing a staff or seal raises its casting performance. Some catalysts favour a school or style, while others offer broad utility. The headline scaling number is useful, but it is not the whole answer: an awkward cast time, poor FP economy, or an unmet requirement can make a higher number worse in play. Try a spell against ordinary enemies before assigning scarce upgrade materials around it.
| Problem | Practical adjustment |
|---|---|
| You run out of FP before the boss is learnable | Shift a flask use toward Cerulean, reduce expensive casts, or keep a melee fallback. |
| A spell whiffs at close range | Keep a faster option or create distance after a safe recovery. |
| You cannot equip every spell you found | Find Memory Stones and remove duplicate-purpose spells first. |
| A focus cannot use the spell | Check the catalyst category and requirements, not only the spell description. |
Faith and Intelligence builds can still use normal weapons, shields, consumables, and Ashes of War. A hybrid tool often gives a safer answer than forcing a long cast under pressure. This page does not rank current meta spells or assume a DLC spell collection; it covers base-game foundations. See Flask Upgrades for assigning resources around a casting plan.
