DREDGE Research Parts Guide: What to Unlock First
On this page
Research unlocks a purchase; it is not the purchase
Research Parts open equipment on the research trees at a dock. Once a tool is unlocked, you still need to buy it from the appropriate seller and fit it into the boat. That distinction saves a frustrating trip: do the research before leaving port, then confirm that you have the cash and slots to use the result.
The first story steps introduce research after the early Pursuits. From then on, Parts can appear during exploration and dredging, and some Pursuits reward them. Treat each one as a route choice. A rod that reaches the habitat on your next main stop is usually more useful than a deep branch you cannot fit or afford yet.
Spend toward a visible obstacle
Name the thing holding you up before choosing a tree.
| Your problem | Research direction |
|---|---|
| A fishing spot says your gear cannot fish there | A rod or line that covers its habitat |
| The crossing consumes too much daylight | An engine branch |
| You are deliberately fishing after dark | Buy and fit a Shipwright light; reserve its slot before the route |
| You want passive catches while travelling | A trawl-net research branch, provided the boat has the space; use a crab pot separately for its own passive catch loop |
Avoid putting every early Part into one category. A fast engine does not catch a mangrove fish, and a specialised rod does not solve a return trip through darkness. Check the equipment grid before you commit, because a good unlock may need a hull change before it fits.
Where to look without turning it into a grind
Dredge marked resource spots and shipwrecks as you travel for a Pursuit. They can provide materials alongside potential Parts, and side jobs create more chances to earn useful rewards. If you find a rare fixed source, place a map marker so you can remember the landmark; do not rely on vague open-water directions.
Pair an unlocked item with Ship upgrades for fitting. Then use Regions and fishing types to choose a destination. See the main Pursuits route for the next story barrier.
Make the decision at the dock
At a dock, open the research screen, choose the branch that answers the obstacle in your journal or encyclopedia, then leave the menu and check the seller. Research only unlocks the item for purchase. After you buy it, open the equipment grid and fit it before you sail away. That four-step sequence prevents the familiar mistake of reaching a fishing spot with a researched item still sitting in a shop list or cargo grid.
Parts are especially valuable around Stellar Basin. The Sampling Device can begin the deep sample route, while a later rod purchase may cover the precise Abyssal or Hadal fish you actually need. Abyssal and Hadal Gear separates those jobs so you do not spend Parts on a branch that fails the next target.
