Sekiro Lady Butterfly Guide: Hirata Estate Phase Control and Illusions

On this page

Treat Hirata as an optional lesson, not a wall

Lady Butterfly sits at the end of the Hirata Estate memory route. You can attempt her early, but she is an optional boss and a useful test of deflection rhythm rather than a mandatory reason to stop the Ashina Outskirts route. If you are repeatedly dying before you can identify her strings, leave, collect a Gourd upgrade or skill point, and return with a clearer plan.

The arena gives you pillars and open floor. Use the pillars to break her line of sight when you need a healing window, but do not run laps for the whole fight. Her Posture recovers while you wait. The safer rhythm is close range: attack until she deflects, answer her return with your own deflection, then resume pressure.

Win the first health bar with timing

Lady Butterfly’s fast attacks punish a delayed guard more than they punish an aggressive sword. Listen for the deflection sound and watch for her counter instead of counting your own hits. When she moves upward, reset the camera and be ready for the throwing knives or a landing attack; sprinting straight under every aerial move can put you into the next strike.

If she creates distance, Shuriken can be a useful situational tool, but do not spend every emblem chasing a small punish. A clean close exchange normally builds more Posture and teaches the timing you need for phase two.

Phase two: solve the illusion, then return to her

Lady Butterfly returns after the first Deathblow. When the illusion summons appear, move through the arena and use pillars to avoid being boxed in. Snap Seeds can clear nearby illusions, but they are a limited resource and should be used when a group is actually stopping your route back to the boss. If you have none, keep moving until the summons change and focus on survival rather than forcing attacks through a crowd.

When she is alone again, return to the same pressure loop. Do not assume the second phase is a separate damage race. Deflecting her strings, protecting your own Posture, and taking a real healing window still win the fight.

Her reward is an early attack-power Memory and access to the next Hirata story step. Before you leave, consider whether the Estate gave you tools such as the Flame Vent or Loaded Axe that are worth fitting for later routes. Prosthetic Tools explains their prerequisites; Deflection and Perilous Attacks is the core skill this boss is checking.
