Sekiro Early Gourd Seeds and Prayer Beads Guide: Heal More and Build Posture

On this page

Seeds and Beads use different menus

A Gourd Seed goes to Emma and increases the Healing Gourd’s uses. A Prayer Bead goes toward a set of four; at an Idol, form that set into a Prayer Necklace to raise Vitality and Posture. Neither upgrade happens automatically when you pick the item up. Make the return to the Temple or an Idol part of the next safe route.

This page stays with the early Ashina subset. It is not a claim that these are every Seed or Bead in the game, and it does not ask you to rush late-game areas for a number on a checklist.

Early Ashina Outskirts upgrades

Item Verified early source What to do next
Gourd Seed General Naomori Kawarada at Outskirts Wall – Gate Path Take it to Emma at the Dilapidated Temple
Prayer Bead General Naomori Kawarada Keep it until you have four, then use an Idol
Gourd Seed Building after the Chained Ogre, before Tenzen’s courtyard Return to Emma rather than holding it for later
Prayer Bead Chained Ogre Add it to the next four-Bead set
Prayer Bead General Tenzen Yamauchi Clear guards and use a stealth Deathblow before the duel
Prayer Bead Attic chest after Gyoubu’s arena Grapple the beams in the building beyond the battlefield

The table gives named landmarks so you can confirm the route in your own world. Do not substitute a similar-looking chest or assume every miniboss has the same reward.

Make upgrades before the boss wall

Kawarada is a good first lesson because the stealth approach can remove one of his markers. The Chained Ogre is a strong reason to spend a Seed immediately: more healing charges help you practise his grab response without restarting every attempt. Tenzen’s courtyard rewards preparation; remove riflemen, withdraw to reset him, then take the stealth opening.

After Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa, cross the battlefield and check the building above for the hidden attic Bead. This is a clear case where looking upward matters more than assuming the main door is the whole route.

Later game states can replace enemies or close off some opportunities, so do not leave named early minibosses unresolved for an entire playthrough if you want their upgrades. This is not a reason to stop enjoying the story; it is a reason to clear a local route while its purpose is still fresh. For long-term forks and lockouts, read the spoiler-marked Progression and Endings.
