Reach the Ashina Castle roof ready to stand your ground

The full Genichiro duel is on the Ashina Castle rooftop, after the Upper Tower route and the Ashina Dojo. The early prologue encounter does not replace this fight. Bring a strengthened Healing Gourd and, if possible, Mikiri Counter from the Shinobi Arts tree. The rooftop is a clean arena, so treat the first attempts as practice: the target is learning where your sword turn begins, not finding a safe corner to run to.

Genichiro has two regular deathblow phases followed by Way of Tomoe. In the first two, close range is usually safer than long range. Attack until he produces the bright deflection flash, then stop attacking and answer his counterattack. This keeps his Posture from recovering while giving you a readable rhythm: your hits, his deflect, his response, your deflect.

His bow changes that rhythm: deflect a single arrow and stay ready for further shots if he jumps back. The important perilous follow-up comes after his jumping downward sword slam. Deflect the slam, then read his sword: a point held in front signals a thrust for Mikiri Counter; a wind-up to the side signals a sweep to jump. The second health bar mixes in the sweep, so do not repeat a thrust counter just because it worked during the first bar.

Genichiro cue Response
Your attack is deflected with a bright flash Defend immediately; he has taken the turn.
Regular bow shot Deflect it while staying close enough to threaten him.
Jumping sword slam into peril Deflect the slam, then read thrust versus sweep and Mikiri or jump.
Long sword flurry Deflect the rhythm you know; guard the rest if your timing breaks.

Turn lightning into the final opening

Way of Tomoe begins after the second deathblow. He is faster and introduces lightning, but the answer is specific: jump as the lightning reaches you, then attack before landing to return it. That is Lightning Reversal. Do not jump too early; you need to be airborne when the strike connects. If the timing is not stable yet, evade and survive rather than taking repeated shocks while trying to learn it in a losing attempt.

Keep the same close-pressure plan through the phase. His posture is easier to build when you make him answer your attacks, and successful lightning reversals create an obvious damage window. Heal after you have made distance following a completed string, not directly after a bow shot that can be followed by another threat.

The fight opens the next main objective with Kuro and Isshin. Speak to Kuro in the room below and follow the smoke-signal lead rather than wandering with no objective. Skills and Mikiri Counter explains the upgrade path, while Deflection and Perilous Attacks is the best place to make the rooftop lessons consistent before the next boss.
