Approach and preparation

Quelaag is at the far end of Blighttown, beyond the poison swamp. Make the lower Blighttown bonfire your checkpoint: after entering the swamp, follow the cave wall on the right into the drain-like tunnel to find it. The nearby waterwheel carries you up to the platforms and the Valley of Drakes exit, which is a useful resupply route once opened; it is not an enemy-clear shortcut through the wooden descent. Carry enough moss or healing for the poison approach, repair your weapon, and make sure you can move freely after entering. The boss arena is open, but Quelaag’s lava can cut it into bad lanes if you fight at the doorway.

Fight around the spider body

Watch the spider body as closely as the woman holding the sword. A forward lunge and the leg sweeps come from the spider, while the human torso can distract you from the real danger. Circle toward a side after the lunge, wait until a sword or leg animation ends, then hit the spider body. A short punish lets you keep the boss in open floor. Staying at the front to finish another swing puts you in the bite, sword, and lava line at once.

Lava spit is a route problem, not a chance to stand still and block. When the spider launches a blob, move away from where it lands and pull Quelaag toward fresh ground. Do not circle into a lava pool just because the boss is facing away. The area explosion has an even clearer tell: the human half slumps forward over the spider and the fire on its abdomen brightens. Back out immediately, wait for the burst, then return through the open lane you left behind.

Quelaag does not add a second health-bar phase, but the floor changes as lava accumulates. That is why the fight feels less forgiving late: old safe spots disappear. Keep each exchange brief, lead the boss around the outside of the room, and only heal after the explosion or a long lunge leaves it committed away from you. If you are taking repeated fire damage, solve your position first; stronger fire gear helps, but it cannot create a route through a pool you walked into.

Reward and next step

Quelaag gives the Soul of Quelaag, which can later be made into a boss weapon at the Giant Blacksmith, so hold it until you know what your build wants. More immediately, climb the stairs behind the arena and ring the second Bell of Awakening. With both bells rung, Sen’s Fortress opens. Follow Base-Game Progression after the bell rather than assuming the newly opened fortress is another Blighttown branch.
