Dark Souls Remastered: Getting Started

Learn the loop before you chase a build
In Dark Souls Remastered, a bonfire is your checkpoint and route marker. Resting also brings ordinary enemies back, so use each return trip to decide what changed: did you unlock a door, find a ladder, meet a merchant, or reach a safer way around a hard group?
From Firelink Shrine, take the upward route through Undead Burg to Undead Parish. Once you activate the Parish church elevator, it creates a fast return to Firelink and turns that first long run into a useful shortcut.
Spend souls before a difficult run when you can. Levels, basic upgrade materials, and a weapon’s stat requirements are useful investments; carrying a huge pile of souls into an unknown boss room is rarely a plan. If you lose a bloodstain, recover it only when you can explain how you will reach it. Rushing in because the number is large often creates a second loss.
Choose a weapon you can use now
Pick one weapon whose move set feels comfortable and meet its Strength and Dexterity requirements. Improve it as you find materials rather than waiting for an imaginary perfect weapon. Keep your equipment load light enough that your roll remains useful, and practice blocking only attacks that will not empty your stamina bar.
Talk to NPCs until their dialogue repeats. They can point toward mechanics, services, and routes that are easy to miss on a first pass. Remastered includes the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, but the early-game lesson is unchanged: open a shortcut, learn the enemies on one loop, and push a little further on the next. See Weapon Upgrades and Humanity and Kindling when those systems start competing for your souls.
Resting at a bonfire refills Estus and establishes a checkpoint, but ordinary enemies return. Make each rest earn its cost: use it after you have opened a route, reached a boss, or need the refill for a deliberate attempt.
