Nioh 3 Getting Started: Learn One Safe Exchange

On this page

Start with the fight in front of you

This guide covers the Nioh 3 base game. The first useful habit is lock-on. It keeps the camera on one enemy and shows that enemy’s Life and Ki, so you can tell the difference between a risky damage window and an opponent who still has enough Ki to answer.

Guard through an unfamiliar string once. Watch where it ends. Then use one short attack string and leave enough Ki to step away. Attacking and guarding both spend Ki; when it is empty, you cannot attack or guard and a hit can leave you open. Do not try to learn every Martial Art before you can recognise that moment.

Pick a starting style for its job

Samurai Style is the steadier choice for a face-to-face exchange. It has stronger guarding, Deflects, stances, and Ki Pulse. Ninja Style is quicker, spends less Ki, and gives extra damage from behind. Its Mist dodge costs no Ki, but it does not restore Ki or clear a Yokai Realm. The styles are tools, not permanent classes. Start with the answer that keeps you alive, then use Style Shift when the situation changes.

If the problem is Start by trying
A close enemy with a readable combo Samurai guard, Deflect, then a short punish
A slow attack you can circle Ninja evade or Mist, then attack from behind
A red-aura Burst Attack A timed Style Shift for Burst Break
A Yokai Realm pool Samurai Ki Pulse after an attack

Use every shrine as a reset point

At a shrine, spend Amrita only after checking what your current weapon needs, set equipment for each style, arrange elixirs and other items on shortcuts, and look at the next objective. Unlocked shrines appear on the map and can be used for fast travel. That makes exploration practical: clear a short path, activate the shrine, then decide whether a nearby Crucible or side route is worth another attempt.

After the prologue, do not ignore the map while chasing a main objective. Exploration progress comes from activities such as Myths, enemy bases, and Lesser Crucibles, and it improves what the map shows. A difficult target is often a prompt to take a nearby route, collect a useful upgrade, and return with more options.

The first mandatory test is Yamagata Masakage. After that, make Samurai and Ninja Styles your next read before committing points or equipment to one approach. Ki Pulse and Burst Break explains the two timings that turn a defensive exchange into an opening.
