Nioh 3 Ki Pulse and Burst Break
On this page
Keep the two timings separate
Ki Pulse and Burst Break both reward timing, but they solve different problems. A Ki Pulse is a Samurai Style action after you attack. When blue light appears around the character, use the prompt to recover some of the Ki spent on that attack. In a Yokai Realm, the same Ki Pulse can dispel the pool that slows Ki recovery. It is a way to continue a good exchange without exhausting yourself.
Burst Break is not Nioh 2’s Burst Counter. In Nioh 3, an enemy’s Burst Attack is marked by a red aura. Shift between Samurai and Ninja at the perfect moment during that attack to interrupt it, damage Life and Ki, and sharply reduce a yokai’s maximum Ki. It is a timed Style Shift, not a regular parry and not a Ki Pulse. If the default combined input feels awkward, controls can be separated in the System menu.
A repeatable fight loop
- Lock on and watch one normal string with your guard ready.
- Punish the recovery with a short Samurai attack string.
- Ki Pulse while the blue-light window is active. If a Yokai Realm is under you, that Pulse also clears it.
- When the enemy turns red, stop the normal combo. Time a Style Shift for Burst Break.
- Spend the resulting opening on damage, a Guardian Spirit Skill, or a safe heal before the next string begins.
Do not mash Style Shift whenever an enemy glows or moves quickly. Burst Break needs the attack’s actual impact timing. A miss can leave you in the wrong style and still inside the hit. Practise it first against one clearly telegraphed Burst Attack, then add it to a boss fight.
Use the style-specific recovery you actually have
Samurai gets the Ki Pulse and precise Deflect. A Deflect restores Ki and also charges the Arts and Ninjutsu gauges. Ninja gets Mist and Evade: Mist costs no Ki and can create a decoy; a precise Evade extends dodge invulnerability and charges both gauges. Neither Ninja tool restores Ki or purifies a Yokai Realm, so shift back to Samurai rather than trying to dodge your way out of a recovery penalty.
Jakotsu-baba is an early practice target because red-aura attacks are part of the fight. Before entering, read Jakotsu-baba for its First Torii Gate route and attack tells. Samurai and Ninja Styles explains when a Mist is safer than a guard. Once the timing is stable, use Soul Cores and Guardian Spirits to add a Spirit Force payoff rather than forcing more hits.
