Majula is more than the first bonfire. The Emerald Herald handles level increases, Lenigrast handles early weapon work after you have opened his service, and travelling NPCs can settle here as you meet them. Spend accumulated souls before a new route, then check the hub after a boss or a major area. A fresh face can mean a new shop, dialogue, or practical item.
Do not forget repair. Dark Souls II can punish a favourite weapon that has been carried through too many enemies, and a damaged tool can make a boss look much tougher than it is. At a smith, repair before reinforcing; then reinforce the weapon you have built around, not every interesting drop in your bag.
Majula also gives you a way to correct a build. A Soul Vessel can be offered to Strowen in Things Betwixt to reset attributes to the starting class values and redistribute the levels. That is a real reset, so decide the new weapon requirements before using one. The vessel does not turn a weak plan into a strong one by itself.
