Dark Souls II Scholar: Getting Started
On this page
Let Majula be your reset point
Majula connects the early branches of Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin. Speak to the Emerald Herald there until her dialogue repeats; she handles levelling once the early condition is met. Return to spend souls, talk to NPCs, and choose a road instead of forcing the group that killed you.
For a first target, leave Majula for the Forest of Fallen Giants and work toward the Cardinal Tower bonfire. It gives early exploration a named checkpoint without claiming the other Majula paths are locked.
This game asks for more deliberate stamina use than many players expect. Leave enough stamina to roll away after an attack, especially when two enemies share the same space. Pull one target with a bow, a thrown item, or careful movement when you can. If a group is still overwhelming, look for a side path, a door, or a position that prevents every enemy from reaching you at once.
Build around a job, not every stat
Meet your weapon requirements, keep enough health and stamina to survive mistakes, and upgrade one weapon you enjoy. Adaptability has a real effect through Agility, but it is only one part of a stable first character. Read the Agility and Adaptability page before spending levels solely to change roll timing.
These pages assume the PS4, Xbox One, or DirectX 11 PC Scholar of the First Sin release, where enemy and item placement was overhauled. Scholar also exists on PS3, Xbox 360, and DirectX 9 PC, but that version does not share the rearranged route. Check the platform before following a pickup or enemy guide. For the next practical system, see Weapon Upgrades or return to the Dark Souls II guide hub.
After a boss or shortcut, return to Majula, speak with the Emerald Herald, and inspect the hub for newly settled NPCs. Spend enough souls to make the next unexplored branch a route lesson instead of a recovery run.
