Stories for the midnight shelf

3473 books across eight primary genres: romance, fantasy, science fiction, horror, mystery and thrillers, historical fiction, literary fiction and adventure. Romantasy and contemporary romance are tags on top of those shelves rather than genres of their own. Every page gives you the author, the publication year, the series it belongs to and a short synopsis that stops before the plot turns.

Search by title or author, narrow the list by primary genre or by tag, or sort it. Every title here is a different book: no duplicate editions and no omnibus volumes. A book that genuinely belongs to two genres appears once and is listed on both.

This is page 57 of the list. The search box and the filter chips read the whole catalogue, not just this page, and the page links below walk the shelf in order.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

Becky Chambers · 2014

Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, a patched-up ship that bores tunnels through space for other people to travel through, because she wants a job far from her past. The crew is a mix of species: a captain who worries about money, a reptilian pilot, a doctor who also cooks, two engineers who bicker constantly, and the ship's own artificial intelligence. They take a contract to open a tunnel to a planet that is joining the Galactic Commons, on the far side of a long stretch of nothing, and the voyage gives everyone aboard time to work out what they are to each other.

The Longest Journey

E. M. Forster · 1907

Rickie Elliot arrives at Cambridge from a miserable boarding school and finds, for the first time, a place where he is not simply the sum of his lameness and his shyness. He falls in with Stewart Ansell and a circle of argumentative undergraduates. Then his old friends from home appear: Agnes Pembroke, whom he half loves, and her brother. When Agnes's fiance is killed, Rickie takes on the role of consoler, which leads him into a marriage and a family secret that will not stay buried.

The Love Hypothesis

Ali Hazelwood · 2021

Olive Smith is a PhD candidate at Stanford, and her best friend has developed a crush on the one man Olive has already been out with. To prove the date meant nothing, Olive kisses the first man who walks past the lab, and then has to live with it, because he is Adam Carlsen, a professor and one of the department's least forgiving supervisors. The story they invent to explain the kiss grows into an arrangement that both of them keep extending. Olive is also trying to hold her research, her funding and her own judgement together.

The Magician's Nephew

C. S. Lewis · 1955

Digory and Polly discover Uncle Andrew's secret workshop and are tricked into touching magic rings that take them out of this world. The experiment succeeds, and the little girl vanishes before Digory's eyes. Neither child is prepared for what follows, because the rings lead to the gateway of the land of Narnia, and to the beginning of its history. Digory's attempt to undo what his uncle has done is what carries the two children from the workshop into the new world.

The Malleus maleficarum of Heinrich Kramer and James Sprenger

Heinrich Institoris · 1486

Usually translated as the Hammer of Witches, the Malleus Maleficarum is the most famous of the many treatises written against witchcraft. The German clergyman Heinrich Kramer wrote it, the first printing appeared at Speyer in 1486, and it set out to prove that sorcery was heresy, to explain how witches might be found and convicted, and to tell the courts what should be done with them.

The Man in the High Castle

Philip K. Dick · 1962

The Axis powers won the Second World War, and by 1962 the United States has been divided between Imperial Japan on the west coast and Nazi Germany in the east, with a thin buffer of mountains in between. The novel follows a handful of people living inside that arrangement: a dealer in American antiques in San Francisco who trades with Japanese officials, his ex-wife, a Swiss businessman travelling on German papers, and a young woman who works for a Japanese trade mission. They are all reading the same banned book, a novel that imagines a world where the Allies won.

About the book library

The library is split into eight primary genres so you can find the kind of book you actually want: romance, where the relationship carries the story; fantasy, from epic quests to cosy shops; science fiction, from the classics to this year's awards; horror, from gothic novels to haunted houses; mystery and thrillers, from detectives and spies to domestic suspense; historical fiction, for stories built inside a past period; literary fiction, for books whose interest is in the writing and the people rather than in a plot engine; and adventure, for journeys, survival and treasure hunts. Each shelf page says what belongs on it.

Tags are a second, separate layer. Romantasy marks the books where romance and a fantasy world carry the story together, and contemporary romance marks the love stories set in the modern real world. Neither is a genre: a tagged book still lives on one or two of the eight shelves, and the tag is a way to narrow a shelf rather than a shelf of its own. Tags have landing pages too.

The title, the author and the publication year are checked against the publisher or a library record before a page goes up, and the cover is the one that record carries. Where no source states the first-publication date, the page says the year is the earliest edition we could confirm instead of claiming a date.

The synopsis on each page is written for this library. It tells you who the characters are and what they are up against, then stops. It is not a review, there are no scores anywhere on these shelves, and nothing here claims that we have read a book we have not written about yet.
