Delia Rae Ivers grew up in the town of Serendipity and left it for medical school a decade ago. Starting a new life meant ending her relationship with Zach Bowden, the young man the town thought of as its rebel, and it also meant not telling him that their relationship had produced a son. The boy has grown up without a father and has been told very little about him. She has been raising him elsewhere since. When her mother becomes ill, Delia answers an advertisement the town has posted for a doctor and comes home, which puts her back in daily contact with the man she has kept a child from, in a place where nothing stays hidden indefinitely.
