Roadwork
Barton George Dawes works at a laundry, lives in a house he bought with his wife and son, and is about to lose all of it to a road extension. The city has decided to run a new highway through the neighbourhood, the compulsory purchase paperwork has been served, and the deadline for moving is fixed. Dawes does not move. He has already lost his son to a brain tumour and his marriage to the aftermath, and the machinery closing in on his house gives him something to fight, which he does with increasing violence.
