Stories for the midnight shelf

3473 books across eight primary genres: romance, fantasy, science fiction, horror, mystery and thrillers, historical fiction, literary fiction and adventure. Romantasy and contemporary romance are tags on top of those shelves rather than genres of their own. Every page gives you the author, the publication year, the series it belongs to and a short synopsis that stops before the plot turns.

Search by title or author, narrow the list by primary genre or by tag, or sort it. Every title here is a different book: no duplicate editions and no omnibus volumes. A book that genuinely belongs to two genres appears once and is listed on both.

This is page 41 of the list. The search box and the filter chips read the whole catalogue, not just this page, and the page links below walk the shelf in order.

Sargasso of Space

Andre Norton · 1955

Dane Thorson finishes trade school and is assigned as apprentice cargo master on the Solar Queen, a free trader that hauls cargo between the planets and takes whatever contracts it can find. At the end of his first flight the captain gets the chance to bid on a newly opened world, and the crew puts everything they have into winning the contract for a planet called Limbo. The information that comes with the contract is not encouraging.

Saturn's Children

Charles Stross · 2008

Humanity has been extinct for more than a century, and the Solar System has been left to the androids that humans built. Freya Nakamichi 47 is a femmebot, one of the last of her line still running, and the market for the work she was designed to do disappeared with the people who paid for it. She takes a job carrying a package from Mercury to Mars, which is enough to put her in the path of some very powerful humanoids who want what is inside it.

Cover of Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh

Sea of Poppies

Amitav Ghosh · 2008

The Ibis is an old schooner with a mixed crew and a hold full of opium, sailing the Indian Ocean in the years just before the Opium Wars. The passengers include a ruined raja, a village widow, an American of mixed parentage and an opium trader with a missionary streak, alongside sailors, stowaways and convicts. The novel moves from the poppy fields of the Ganges to the high seas and the back streets of China, and as their old ties fall away the people aboard begin to think of themselves as ship-brothers.

Second Foundation

Isaac Asimov · 1953

The Mule has taken the Foundation apart and is now looking for the other one. Hari Seldon established a second colony of scholars at the opposite end of the galaxy, and it has been hidden for centuries, which is the only reason the plan still has a chance: the Mule's search for it becomes the whole plot of the first half of the book. The second half moves the question forward by some years and puts a young woman and her father at the centre of a hunt run from the other direction, where the people doing the looking are being looked at in turn. The novel closes the trilogy.

Cover of Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Serpent & Dove

Shelby Mahurin · 2019

Louise Le Blanc ran from her coven two years ago and survives in the city of Cesarine by stealing whatever she can and using no magic at all, because witches in Cesarine are hunted, feared and burned. Reid Diggory is a Chasseur sworn to the Church, and his life has been built on one rule: a witch does not get to live. Neither of them meant to meet. One badly chosen stunt leaves the two of them bound to each other in a marriage the Church cannot easily undo, in a city where Lou's real enemies are already looking for her. The first Serpent & Dove novel puts a witch and a witch hunter in the same house and lets the arithmetic do the rest.

Eva Mercy writes best-selling erotica in Brooklyn, raises her daughter and is behind on everything. Shane Hall is a reclusive, prize-winning novelist who avoids attention, and he turns up in New York unexpectedly. They meet at a literary event and the room notices, because the city's Black literary scene knows both of them. Nobody there knows that Eva and Shane spent one week together as teenagers, twenty years earlier, or that they have been answering each other in their books ever since. The novel covers the seven days that follow.

Cover of Sexual Personae by Camille Paglia

Sexual Personae

Camille Paglia · 1990

Sexual Personae is Camille Paglia's long argument about sex and decadence in Western art and literature, which Yale University Press brought out in 1990 after seven New York publishers had turned it down. Her account of Western culture turns on the opposition she draws between the Apollonian and the Dionysian, with Apollo standing for order, culture and reason and Dionysus for chaos, nature and emotion, and she tests that idea against a long line of artists and writers, from the ancient world to Emily Dickinson and Oscar Wilde.

Shadow of the Storm

Connilyn Cossette · 2016

Having left Egypt with the Hebrews during the Exodus, Shira is living in freedom at the foot of Mount Sinai. When the people build a golden idol in defiance of Yahweh, the chaos that follows gives her an unexpected chance to learn midwifery, and she discovers that her gifts show best when she is helping at a birth. Her mother wants her to keep to the family weaving trade, and Shira apprentices herself as a midwife anyway. Then a delivery goes badly wrong.

About the book library

The library is split into eight primary genres so you can find the kind of book you actually want: romance, where the relationship carries the story; fantasy, from epic quests to cosy shops; science fiction, from the classics to this year's awards; horror, from gothic novels to haunted houses; mystery and thrillers, from detectives and spies to domestic suspense; historical fiction, for stories built inside a past period; literary fiction, for books whose interest is in the writing and the people rather than in a plot engine; and adventure, for journeys, survival and treasure hunts. Each shelf page says what belongs on it.

Tags are a second, separate layer. Romantasy marks the books where romance and a fantasy world carry the story together, and contemporary romance marks the love stories set in the modern real world. Neither is a genre: a tagged book still lives on one or two of the eight shelves, and the tag is a way to narrow a shelf rather than a shelf of its own. Tags have landing pages too.

The title, the author and the publication year are checked against the publisher or a library record before a page goes up, and the cover is the one that record carries. Where no source states the first-publication date, the page says the year is the earliest edition we could confirm instead of claiming a date.

The synopsis on each page is written for this library. It tells you who the characters are and what they are up against, then stops. It is not a review, there are no scores anywhere on these shelves, and nothing here claims that we have read a book we have not written about yet.
