Pearl in the Mist
Ruby has been a Dumas for a year and still cannot quite believe the New Orleans mansion she lives in or the father she has only recently met.
About
Pearl in the Mist is a novel by the American writer V. C. Andrews, published by Pocket Books in 1994.
Ruby grew up in the Louisiana bayou and has spent a year living as a Dumas in a large house in New Orleans, where the wealth still does not feel like hers and where the father she never knew is the one person she is glad to have found. Her stepmother Daphne makes no secret of her contempt for Ruby's background, and her twin sister Gisselle, who is recovering from a serious accident, answers every attempt at closeness with resentment and betrayal. Ruby's father sends both girls to an exclusive boarding school for their final year, which Ruby hopes will give her some distance from the house and a fresh start with her sister. What she finds is that her kind of background is not welcome among the students there either.
