Baldur’s Gate 3: Recruit the Owlbear Cub Without Playing Chicken Chase

This page includes story or boss spoilers.

Meet the family in the Owlbear Nest

The cave entrance is beside the river northeast of the Blighted Village, around X:85, Y:444. From the bridge west of the Emerald Grove, head north toward the riverbank rather than continuing straight into the village. Enter the Owlbear Nest and follow the passage toward the mother and cub.

Let the encounter become a conversation. You can calm the mother and retreat; killing her yourself is not required to recruit the cub. Even after a successful check, respect her warning and back away instead of approaching the cub or nest again.

If you choose to fight, the cub must survive. The simplest recruitment route avoids that fight altogether. Non-lethal attacks against the cub are not a reliable substitute for sparing it: knocking it out can remove it from the later recruitment sequence.

After the encounter and subsequent long rests, goblins take the surviving cub to their camp. Do not expect it to join you directly outside the cave.

Free it from Krolla

Enter the Goblin Camp peacefully if its guards are still neutral. In the outdoor courtyard, look to the left of Volo’s stage for Krolla and her Chicken Chase activity. Once the cub’s capture has happened, it replaces the chicken used for the game.

Speak with the cub and invite it to your camp. Without Speak with Animals, this can involve an Animal Handling check and letting it learn your scent. With the spell active, you can make the invitation directly in conversation. Either way, the invitation and its freedom are separate steps.

Krolla must agree to let it go, or the captors must be removed. Persuasion, Intimidation and an Illithid dialogue option can obtain its release; buying it costs 500 gold. You do not have to pay if a dialogue approach succeeds.

Chicken Chase is optional. You can decline the wager and still recruit the cub. If you do play, the game asks you to guide it through the courtyard course toward the posts. Convincing it to attack goblins puts the animal in danger and does not help you bring it home safely.

Once it is free and knows where to find you, let it leave. The next part happens at camp, rather than through an escort marker.

Finish both camp visits

Continue exploring and taking normal long rests. Its scenes may not be the next ones in your camp queue, so a single rest without a visit is not proof that the rescue failed.

Visit What to do
The cub arrives hungry Offer food and avoid threatening or crowding it. Its departure afterward does not mean recruitment failed.
It returns injured Choose a dialogue option to examine, clean or treat the wound and pass the available check.
It settles in The cub becomes a camp follower you can visit and pet.

The wound scene offers different checks depending on whether the cub already trusts you and whether Speak with Animals is active. Read the choices available to your speaker; do not attack it or select an option that scares it away while trying to rush through the dialogue.

This gives you a camp follower, not an extra combat-party slot or an ordinary early-game summon. You can still enjoy its camp scenes alongside the companions in your travelling party.

If you are also freeing Volo, handle his stage conversation while the courtyard remains accessible. Finish any immediate emergencies before resting repeatedly for optional scenes; the resting guide explains how those priorities fit together.
