Valheim Beehives: Find a Queen Bee, Make Honey, and Fix the Space Warning

On this page

Find a Queen bee in a wild bee nest, bring it home, and build a Beehive with 10 Wood within Workbench range. A correctly placed hive produces Honey over time, giving you a regular supply for mead bases without repeatedly searching abandoned buildings.

Bring home the Queen bee

Search abandoned houses and villages in the Meadows. Bee nests can also appear in contested towers in the Black Forest, but the Meadows are a sensible place to begin looking. Check buildings as you explore; a particular house is not guaranteed to contain a nest.

A Crude Bow and Wood Arrows let you break a nest from a distance. Keep away from it while attacking: getting close to a nest or provoking it can expose you to poison. Once it breaks, collect the Queen bee and dropped Honey before leaving.

Each hive you construct needs its own Queen bee. If you want a second hive, keep checking wild nests on later trips. Collect the bee when you find one rather than marking the house and assuming you will remember to return.

Give the hive open space

Bring 10 Wood and 1 Queen bee into Workbench range and select the Beehive in the Hammer building menu. Start with open ground in the Meadows. Hives also work in the Black Forest and Plains, but moving your first supply into a later biome buys you nothing by itself.

The hive needs less than 60% cover. Unlike a workbench, it should not be enclosed in a roofed workshop. A pole or wall can support a hive, provided the surrounding placement remains open. Leave yourself enough room to approach and collect the Honey.

If the bees need more space, check nearby roofing and enclosing walls before building another hive in the same cramped spot. Try a more open position, check the bees again, and only then finish decorating the area.

Collect before the hive fills

A hive makes roughly one Honey per 20 real minutes and stores at most four Honey. Empty it to make room for more. A full hive cannot build an unlimited reserve while you are away.

For example, three full hives hold 12 Honey. That covers a mead recipe asking for 10 and leaves two in storage. You can start with one hive; extra hives increase how much you can collect together.

Check the hives when you return from gathering and put the Honey with your brewing ingredients.

The message “The bees are Sleeping” can appear at night or during rain. Check again in daylight and dry weather before treating that message as a placement failure. A space warning calls for a look at the surroundings; sleeping text alone is not a reason to rebuild the whole apiary.

The Mead Ketill and Fermenter guide shows how to turn that Honey into Minor healing mead.
