Valheim Portals and Metal Guide: Tags, Return Routes, and Ore Transport

On this page

Build the first pair for recovery, not decoration

A wooden Portal needs 20 Fine Wood, 10 Greydwarf Eyes, and 2 Surtling Cores, plus a workbench in range to place it. Fine Wood comes from birch or oak; Greydwarf Eyes come from Black Forest Greydwarves; Surtling Cores are found in Burial Chambers. Place one portal inside or beside your protected home base, then build the other only after you have reached a useful destination safely.

Interact with each portal and give both the exact same tag. Capital letters, spaces, and spelling matter. A simple name such as Forest is easier to diagnose than a string of symbols. A portal with no matching tag is idle. If two destinations share the same tag, do not assume it will always choose the one you wanted; use one unique tag for one pair.

Put the field-side portal on a clear Meadows edge or a sheltered outpost, not in the middle of a burial chamber entrance, Troll path, or boss arena. Add a chest, roofed workbench, fire, and bed where practical. The portal lets you return for food, repairs, and a fresh Rested buff, but it is not useful if an enemy destroys it while you are away.

Separate the portal load from the ore load

On a normal world, wooden portals move you and ordinary items but restrict raw metals and metal bars such as copper, tin, and bronze. Empty the ore into a marked chest before stepping through. Then return by cart, boat, or a closer smelter route to move the ore physically. Trying to walk into the portal with a restricted item is a useful warning that the cargo plan needs changing, not a bug to solve by repeatedly interacting.

For a first copper route, keep a portal at home and a second one at the Black Forest edge. Use it to bring back food, arrows, cores, and non-metal loot. Stage copper and tin at the field chest. When enough ore is ready, make one deliberate transport run rather than mixing a heavy ore trip with dungeon exploration or a boss attempt. Copper, Tin, and Bronze has the smelter and forge loop waiting at the other end.

Check the setting before treating metal rules as universal

World modifiers can change portal behaviour. If the world owner has chosen a setting that permits all items through portals, metal transport follows that setting. The default route above assumes normal world settings, so ask the host or inspect the world modifiers before building a boat route that your world does not need.

Stone Portals are a later, larger option. They use the same tag system, but their high-tier materials and Stonecutter requirement put them well beyond a restart’s copper stage. They can carry valuable items when the destination portal supports them; a Stone Portal paired with a wooden portal is still limited by the wooden end. Do not confuse that late-game convenience with an early Bronze Age recipe.

Keep one home portal untagged until you need it. When you die far away, rename it to the new recovery portal’s tag after you place the field end, then reset it once the grave is safe. That small habit makes Death and Corpse Recovery much less punishing.
