Ivar holds Kattegat after defeating Lagertha and Bjorn, but Harald finds little comfort in the victory. His brother, wife and unborn child are dead. Rollo arrives to collect the price of his support, demanding trade concessions and military assistance from Ivar. He also insists that Bjorn must be protected, leaving Ivar with an ally who expects obedience as well as payment.
Outside Kattegat, Lagertha and the surviving exiles consider Heahmund's proposal to seek refuge in England. Rollo finds their hiding place and offers passage to Frankia. He claims that Bjorn is his son, but Bjorn rejects the claim as unproven and identifies himself with Ragnar. Lagertha refuses Rollo's protection too. Their group takes a ship and follows Heahmund toward Wessex instead.
In Iceland, Floki offers his life as a sacrifice to end the settlers' violence. A divided vote leaves Helgi deciding his fate, and Helgi chooses to keep him alive despite Eyvind's wishes. Alfred meanwhile prepares Wessex against raids, challenges the church over religious teaching and faces Judith's demand that he marry. Heahmund promises Lagertha that he will not betray her, yet their arrival gives her little reassurance: the exiles are carried through Wessex in cages as hostile townspeople watch.
