Murder Most Foul

Spoilers for this episode.

Alfred releases Lagertha and her companions after Heahmund vouches for them. Bjorn presses the king to honor the land agreement associated with Ecbert, while Lagertha accepts Alfred's demand that the Vikings demonstrate their loyalty. Alfred approaches Ubbe about baptism as a way to make their presence more acceptable. Bjorn remains resistant to the compromises that their refuge in Wessex now requires.

Heahmund discovers that Cuthred has taken his bishopric during his absence. Their confrontation reveals hostility toward Alfred within the church, but Cuthred also acquires a more personal weapon: knowledge of Heahmund's affair with Lagertha. When he threatens to expose them, Heahmund enters the church and kills him. Elsewith, Alfred's prospective bride, develops an interest in Bjorn and sleeps with him, adding another secret to the royal household.

In Kattegat, Ivar chooses Freydis as his wife and queen. She assures him that she can bear his child, presenting his supposed divinity as the answer to his doubts, then secretly sleeps with another man. Margrethe urges Hvitserk to kill Ivar while Ivar dreams of her attacking him. Hooded killers subsequently murder her, ending her bid to influence the brothers. Away from both courts, Floki questions whether his vision of Iceland as a home among the gods existed only in his own mind.
