Borch Three Jackdaws recruits Geralt for a dragon hunt, accompanied by the warriors Téa and Véa. Geralt initially refuses to kill a dragon, then joins when he sees Yennefer among the competing hunters. Jaskier travels with him while dwarves and the Reavers pursue the same prize. The journey brings them along a dangerous mountain route. Borch and his companions appear to fall to their deaths, leaving Geralt and Yennefer to continue toward the lair without them.

The hunt becomes a defence of the creature's offspring. Borch returns as a golden dragon, revealing why he needed Geralt's help. Geralt and Yennefer fight the Reavers beside Téa and Véa, protecting the egg instead of claiming the king's reward. Afterwards, Borch's words expose the wish connecting the pair. Yennefer questions whether her feelings were freely chosen and leaves. Geralt lashes out at Jaskier, blaming him for the relationships and obligations that have disrupted his life, and the bard walks away too.

Ciri and Dara question the man posing as Mousesack until his answers betray him. Their escape from the doppler does not restore their friendship. Dara frees Ciri after she is tied to a tree, but refuses to keep travelling into danger with her. The doppler also turns on Cahir after discovering that the princess was a more dangerous assignment than promised.
