Geralt's search for a djinn goes wrong when he and Jaskier quarrel over the vessel he has pulled from a lake. The released creature leaves the bard choking and coughing blood. Ordinary treatment cannot cure the magical injury, so Geralt takes him to Yennefer in Rinde. She agrees to help after recognizing the djinn's seal. Their attraction grows during the meeting, but she has her own reason to want control of the creature: she hopes its power can restore her fertility.

Yennefer enchants Geralt and sends him against people who have opposed her in town. He wakes in a cell without remembering the attacks. When his angry wish kills the jailer, it becomes clear that the djinn's wishes belong to him rather than Jaskier. Yennefer tries to make herself the creature's vessel and loses control. Geralt returns to save her, makes his remaining wish and survives the collapsing house with her. They become lovers, although he does not explain the wish.

Ciri's apparent route back to someone she trusts is a trap. Cahir employs a doppler who takes Mousesack's appearance and kills the real druid. The dryads offer the princess a place in Brokilon, but the false Mousesack arrives claiming to bring her to Geralt. Ciri leaves their protection with Dara and the disguised creature, unaware that the familiar face conceals an enemy.
