Omie tracks Calamita to Liberal, Kansas, using a captured Fadda man, Aldo Abruzo, for information. He waits at a gas station and helps its attendant paint while watching the road. Aldo tries to escape when a car approaches, and Omie shoots him before discovering that Calamita is driving it. The story then returns to Rabbi and Satchel's arrival the previous day. They take a room in a boarding house divided between feuding sisters. Rabbi searches for money he hid years earlier, while Satchel finds a terrier and names it Rabbit.
Rabbi and Satchel encounter a suspicious policeman during their visit to town, and Rabbi decides they should leave Liberal. He tells Satchel the dog cannot come, then learns that it is the boy's birthday. Hoping to bring back a treat, Rabbi goes to the gas station as a storm gathers. He finds the attendant and Aldo dead and Omie wounded, with Calamita holding him at gunpoint. Calamita shoots Rabbi in the shoulder, then kills Omie after Omie fights back. A tornado tears through the station and sweeps Rabbi and Calamita away. Back at the boarding house, Satchel waits for Rabbi's return. When Rabbi still fails to appear, Satchel takes a revolver and leaves on foot with Rabbit.
