Oraetta learns that Harvard survived her poisoning and begins packing to flee. She finds Ethelrida's forgotten notebook in the closet and connects its handwriting with the anonymous letter. Gaetano returns to Josto and knocks him unconscious, but then embraces him. Rather than turn against his brother as Loy intended, Gaetano respects Josto's ruthlessness and accepts his leadership. Loy learns that releasing Gaetano has failed to divide the Faddas and calls on the Fargo mob for help. Deafy confronts Loy about Zelmare and Swanee, forcing him to reveal their planned train journey to Philadelphia.
Odis asks to join Deafy's operation, saying he wants to become an honest policeman again. At the station, his compulsions initially keep him trapped in the car while officers move inside. Zelmare and Swanee see the police approaching and open fire, leaving officers and civilians dead. Odis finally enters and finds Deafy holding the women at gunpoint. Instead of helping him make the arrests, Odis shoots Deafy and then Swanee. Zelmare escapes, leaving Swanee behind. Elsewhere, Josto and Gaetano are together at their mother's house when Fargo gunmen attack. Gaetano returns fire and drives the attackers away, but the brothers discover that their mother, Chianna, has been killed in the shooting.
