The Cannon-Fadda war continues into 1951, and Odis arrests Josto and Gaetano in an effort to reclaim his police work. Josto's threats no longer persuade him to cooperate. Loy seeks support from Happy Halloway, but Happy and Leon secretly negotiate with Josto to take over Loy's organisation. Opal brings Loy news of their betrayal. At home, Ethelrida asks Dibrell about the figure haunting their family and hears the story of Theodore Roach, a slave owner. Oraetta then confronts Ethelrida about the missing ring, but the girl threatens to expose what she found in the apartment.
Josto and Gaetano wait outside Odis's home after ransacking his apartment. Odis discovers the damage and tries to flee, only to become trapped in his car as Gaetano approaches. Gaetano shoots him, then trips while walking away and accidentally shoots himself in the head. Josto flees alone. Satchel continues travelling with Rabbit and uses his gun to fend off men who threaten him. Oraetta enters the Smutny home to kill Ethelrida, but the appearance of Roach's ghost drives her away. Police arrest her after she returns home. Ethelrida takes Donatello's ring to Loy and offers evidence against Oraetta in exchange for freeing her family's funeral business from his control.
