Rachel struggles to make friends after moving and finds comfort in pop star Ashley O's music. For her birthday she receives Ashley Too, a small talking doll that offers encouragement in the singer's voice. Her sister Jack dislikes its endless optimism, particularly after Rachel's attempt to perform at a school talent show ends badly. Meanwhile, Ashley wants to write darker music than her controlling aunt and manager Catherine will permit.
Catherine discovers Ashley has stopped taking her medication and drugs her into a coma. She presents the collapse as an accident while arranging to extract songs from Ashley's sleeping brain and replace her onstage with a hologram. When a news report makes Rachel's doll malfunction, Jack removes a limiter. The doll contains a much fuller copy of Ashley's mind than its cheerful responses suggested, including memories of Catherine's control.
Ashley Too convinces the sisters to drive to the house, claiming they can retrieve evidence. Once inside, it disconnects the machine attached to Ashley, intending to end her suffering. Instead, removing the system keeping her comatose allows her to wake. Rachel and Jack overpower the staff trying to sedate her again and take her to Catherine's presentation. Their arrival exposes the supposedly irreversible coma as the holographic performance collapses. Later Ashley performs her own rock music with Jack on bass, while Rachel and the doll watch from the crowd.
