Chris works as a rideshare driver, waiting outside Smithereen's offices for somebody connected to the social network. He also attends a bereavement group, where he meets Hayley, whose daughter died by suicide. Hayley keeps trying to unlock the daughter's account in search of an explanation. Chris's own plan takes shape when he picks up Jaden, draws a gun and abducts him, only to discover that his hostage is an intern.
A police pursuit leaves their car stranded in a field. Chris demands a call with founder Billy Bauer, interrupting Billy's silent retreat and drawing company staff into the negotiations. Smithereen's records help them investigate Chris faster than the officers can. Chris repeatedly frustrates attempts to manage him through intermediaries. He tells Jaden the gun is fake to calm him, then fires it when that statement reaches police and they approach.
Billy finally speaks to Chris, who admits he caused the crash that killed his fiancée by checking a notification while driving. He wants somebody to hear his guilt and anger about the service's addictive design. Before ending the call, he asks Billy to help Hayley obtain her daughter's password. Chris intends to release Jaden and kill himself, but Jaden struggles to stop him. A police marksman fires as they wrestle. The final reactions and phone notifications leave the shooting's precise outcome unseen, while other users quickly return to their lives.
