Monster Hunter Wilds: Getting Started
On this page
Learn one weapon before you build around it
Wilds begins by giving you access to all 14 weapon types. Take two or three into the training area, read their Play Guide → Weapon Controls entry, and practise a short normal loop, one evasive or defensive answer, and the weapon’s Focus Mode action. Pick the one whose recovery and rhythm make sense to you. The first weapon does not lock the character, and your Seikret can carry a second weapon later, but an early upgrade should go to the weapon you can already use against a moving target.
Let Alma, Gemma, and the tent do different jobs
Alma is the route back into work. Speak to her at camp to open the Quest Counter, read the target and condition, then accept the assignment or post an optional hunt. Gemma is the smithy contact: after a hunt, compare one weapon upgrade or one armour skill to the next target instead of crafting every unlocked piece. The tent and item box are the reset point for healing, ammo or coatings, crafted supplies, and equipment changes.
| Before leaving camp | Make this decision |
|---|---|
| Alma’s Quest Counter | Is this a hunt, capture, or another condition that changes the finish? |
| Gemma’s smithy | Which one item makes the next target easier to learn? |
| Item box and tent | Are healing and weapon-specific supplies restored? |
| Seikret and map | Which target, camp, or material marker should the mount guide you toward? |
Use the Seikret to protect your time in the field
Set a map marker for the target or material you actually need, then let the Seikret guide the travel while you check the field ahead. The Seikret is also how you carry a second weapon, so make the backup purposeful: a long-range option, a safer reach tool, or another moveset you have already tested. Do not treat it as a reason to bring two unfamiliar weapons into a first boss hunt.
When the monster appears, the first objective is information. Watch one attack chain, choose a safe body part, and use Focus Mode and Wounds to keep pressure there. After the hunt, use its materials for a specific upgrade and repeat the loop. Choose Your First Weapon helps narrow the weapon choice; Quest Progression and Preparation covers the longer assignment rhythm.
