Peek first; cross only when the route needs it
Axiom and Umbral overlap, but they do not play the same way. In Axiom, raise the lamp to peek into Umbral and inspect what the dead world adds to the room. That quick view can expose a bridge, route, object, parasite, or obstacle without committing your whole run.
Entering Umbral fully is different. You can cross through an Umbral rift or arrive there after dying in Axiom. Once you are in, enemies and pressure build over time. Do not enter only because the lamp is available; enter because you can name the shortcut, item, or exit you are pursuing.
Know the exits before you need one
Resting at a Vestige returns you to Axiom, but it is not the only way out. An Emergence Effigy also lets you leave Umbral. That matters during a long route: find the effigy, clear the path around it, and use it before the realm’s growing danger turns a solved puzzle into a desperate retreat.
Your first death in Axiom has already spent your ordinary second chance. In Umbral, another death is a full checkpoint return, so stop treating every enemy as optional loot. Run past a group when the route is already understood, or turn back to a Vestige or Effigy when your resources are low. Read a room in three passes
In a new area, scan Axiom for ordinary exits and enemy positions. Raise the lamp only long enough to look for the missing bridge, platform, object, or hostile feature. Then decide whether the goal is worth a full Umbral entry. This three-pass habit makes the lamp a route tool rather than a permanent filter over every fight. If you enter, take the useful item or shortcut first and leave when the task is done.
