Elden Ring Nightreign: Weapons, Passives, and Upgrades

Choose the weapon that solves the next problem
Weapons come from chests, crates, enemies, merchants, and other expedition rewards. Start by checking whether a drop is usable for your Nightfarer, then ask whether it improves your next fight. A stronger weapon with an unfamiliar moveset can be excellent, but only if you can land its attacks without giving up every safe opening.
Do not judge an item by attack alone. Held weapons can provide passive effects even when they are not currently in your hands, so a backup weapon may earn its slot through its passive. Read the card before selling or replacing it. If the team is heading toward a boss with a known weakness, a weapon matching that weakness can be worth prioritising; for Tricephalos, Gladius is weak to Holy damage.
Share obvious upgrades. A bow that fits Ironeye or a heavy weapon a Raider can use now is more valuable in the right hands than in a spare slot. Runes are shared, so help a teammate finish a fight rather than competing for every enemy.
Upgrade only after you have a keeper
Smithing Stones raise a weapon’s rarity. Find them in places such as tunnels and use an anvil at a merchant to improve a weapon during the expedition. The upgrade itself does not require spending runes, but it does consume the appropriate Smithing Stone, so timing matters.
| Stone | Upgrade at an ordinary anvil |
|---|---|
| Smithing Stone [1] | Common, white weapon to Uncommon, blue +1. |
| Smithing Stone [2] | Uncommon, blue +1 weapon to Rare, purple +2. |
A white starting weapon needs both steps to become purple. A Smithing Stone [2] cannot replace the first stone. Check the weapon’s current colour before searching a tunnel or spending time visiting another merchant.
Avoid upgrading the first serviceable weapon in the opening minute. Clear an early camp, see a few drops, and then commit when you have a weapon you expect to carry into the next night. Upgrade sooner when the team already knows its target and your weapon is a clean fit; wait when every drop is still replacing the last one.
Use this checkpoint before spending a stone:
- Does this weapon match my Nightfarer’s comfortable range and timing?
- Does it have a useful attack type or passive for the coming boss?
- Am I likely to keep it after the next fort or field boss?
- Is an anvil available now, with enough day left to benefit from the upgrade?
If most answers are yes, spend the stone. If not, keep moving and let the route give you more information.
Make equipment a team conversation
At a merchant, tell the team what you are upgrading before everyone runs off. One player might have the best boss damage option, while another needs the anvil to make their starting weapon viable. In a duo, that brief pause is especially important because both players must cover revives and damage.
Equipment improves an expedition, but it cannot replace positioning. Keep a flask route, meet at the night boundary, and know who can rescue a downed teammate. Read co-op and revival before assuming a higher rarity alone will carry the boss fight.
