The Fires of Heaven

The Fires of Heaven is a fantasy novel by the American writer Robert Jordan, published in 1993 as the fifth book of The Wheel of Time.

The wards around the prison of the Dark One are failing slowly, and the Forsaken, his immortal servants, spend the book arranging the affairs of kingdoms to suit their master. Rand al'Thor has been named the Dragon Reborn and knows that he has to strike at the enemy, but the people he needs are working against one another: allies have betrayed him, his forces are divided, the Aes Sedai have fallen into civil war, and the One Power is driving him mad as it does every man who uses it. He rides out to meet the enemy anyway, and the book moves between the desert campaigns and the politics of the cities, where his allies watch each other as closely as they watch the enemy.

The novel has a prologue and fifty-six chapters. It is also the first book of the series in which one of the three ta'veren from the Two Rivers does not appear, because Perrin is away for the whole of it.
