Crossroads of Twilight
The tenth book of the Wheel of Time opens with the world reacting to a vast display of power, while the three principal figures are each occupied with something else: Mat is fleeing with a kidnapped empress, Perrin is trying to free his captured wife, and Egwene is working to reunite the Aes Sedai before the Last Battle.
About
Crossroads of Twilight is a fantasy novel by Robert Jordan and the tenth book of his Wheel of Time series, released in January 2003. It went straight to the top of the New York Times hardcover fiction list, the third volume in the sequence to do so, and stayed on the list for the following three months.
The novel is a book of consequences arriving slowly. The previous volume ended with a great deal of the One Power being used, and here the world's rulers and factions are still working out what it meant while the characters who matter are engaged elsewhere: Mat Cauthon is escaping the Seanchan empire with the Daughter of the Nine Moons, Perrin Aybara is hunting the people who took his wife, and Egwene al'Vere is trying to hold the Aes Sedai together.
Jordan writes a very large story through many points of view, and this volume spends much of its length on the political and personal business that the later books depend on. It ends with the pieces of the Last Battle still being assembled rather than with a resolution.
