Artemis Fowl and the Arctic Incident
Artemis Fowl is twelve, a criminal by choice and the richest boy in Ireland, and he has a problem he cannot solve with money: his father is missing, and the trail leads to a kidnapping in the Arctic.
About
Artemis Fowl and the Arctic Incident is a novel by the Irish writer Eoin Colfer, published in 2002 and known in the United States as Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident. It is the second book of the Artemis Fowl series, after Artemis Fowl and before Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code.
The story opens with Artemis at school and his bodyguard Butler watching the Arctic, where Artemis's father is being held by the Russian mafia, and the rescue has to be arranged from the other end of Europe. Meanwhile the People, the fairy civilisation living under the ground, have a rebellion of goblins to deal with, and Commander Root has no choice but to bring Artemis and his associate Holly Short into the operation. Colfer keeps the series' two sides in the same book, so that the humans and the fairies are forced to trade information and secrets, and the second half moves the whole story to the ice. The technology of the fairy world, from the meshed tunnels to the equipment the LEP use, is described as it becomes necessary.
The novel was written for readers of around Artemis's age and keeps the heist mechanics of the first book while widening the setting to include the Arctic and the fairy chain of command.
