Wednesday tries to contact Goody for guidance, but a mysterious invitation takes her to Crackstone's crypt instead. Her friends have arranged a surprise birthday party there. Wednesday pays more attention to an inscription matching the threat on Nevermore's lawn, and a vision directs her toward the Gates mansion. She later sees Mayor Walker leaving that house with information for the sheriff. Before he can deliver it, a blue car runs him down outside the Weathervane. Weems responds by restricting students to campus, but Wednesday deceives Enid and Tyler into taking her back to the mansion. Neither realises that their supposed outing is another investigation.
The house contains signs of recent occupation, the car connected to Walker's injuries, and a room associated with Laurel Gates. A monster attack separates the group, forcing Wednesday and Enid into a basement where they find the victims' missing body parts. They escape and find Tyler injured; Xavier arrives to help them get away. Wednesday cannot turn the discovery into a reliable case because the evidence is removed before the sheriff sees it. Weems gives her another chance after hearing about Rowan's prophecy, but Enid refuses to keep accepting the risks. She moves out of their room. Wednesday finds photographs of herself hidden in Laurel's music box, while someone kills Walker in hospital.
