Harald prepares to sail for Wessex with Ivar and Hvitserk, leaving Erik and Ingrid to govern Kattegat together. Ingrid asks whether he expects to return, but Harald offers no reassurance. Erik soon treats their shared authority as a chance to claim both the throne and Ingrid. He assumes Harald will never come back and presses her to accept him as king, despite his earlier role in selling her into slavery.
Ingrid responds by preparing a spell against Erik. He begins losing his sight and eventually becomes completely blind, leaving the man who expected to control Kattegat dependent on her. Across the sea, Alfred receives warning that the Viking force includes Ragnar’s sons. He decides to abandon the royal villa rather than remain exposed to attack. Elsewith objects to the retreat and to his willingness to make agreements with enemies she believes will never honour them.
The Vikings land in England, where Saxon soldiers ambush Ivar’s force. Hvitserk arrives with his fighters, and the brothers drive their attackers into retreat. Ivar also speaks privately about Harald’s uncertain future, exposing a division within the invading army. Far away, Ubbe and Torvi lie among the exhausted survivors of their voyage. Ubbe spots land, though Torvi cannot initially see it. As the coastline becomes visible, he asks Othere’s forgiveness for his earlier attack, and the survivors finally have somewhere to steer.
