The Final Straw

Full episode spoilers.

Ivar and Hvitserk return to Kattegat to find Harald on the throne and a crowd that regards them as traitors. Hvitserk argues that their connection to Ragnar still has value, and Harald invites them to a feast. There, Harald acknowledges his own regret over killing his brother. When Ivar is challenged about his former claim to be a god, he drops his crutch and falls to the floor. The crowd laughs with him, easing the hostility toward the brothers.

Hvitserk visits Bjorn’s tomb and speaks about his failures before spending the night with a woman he believes is a goddess. By morning she has vanished, and he kneels outside in the rain. Ivar also struggles to decide what to do next. Memories of Ragnar and an encounter with the Seer lead him back to the prospect of war. He proposes an attack on Wessex, and Harald lets him address the people in support of another expedition to England.

Ubbe’s remaining travellers are still stranded at sea, rationing water as more of their companions die. His anger increasingly falls on Othere, whose account of his past leaves Ubbe suspicious. Their different faiths add to the tension aboard the boat. During a storm, Ubbe attacks him, but Torvi intervenes. She challenges Ubbe to change the behaviour that has followed them from their old home, even as their immediate problem remains finding land.
