Floki remains suspended in the cave while Helga tries to shield him from the dripping water. Ragnar makes her tell him that Angrboda is dead, adding grief to the punishment for Athelstan's murder. Ragnar later sees a vision of Athelstan asking for mercy. He goes to the cave and cuts Floki free, ending the confinement without restoring the easy friendship they once shared before the killing.
Ecbert also sees Athelstan in a vision and takes it as news that his friend has died. He tells Judith, who grieves but conceals the reason for her tears when Aethelwulf returns with Kwenthrith. Aethelwulf begins a sexual relationship with the rescued queen. In Paris, Gisla demands to end her unconsummated marriage. Rollo's inability to speak her language leaves him unable to answer her humiliation at the table.
Bjorn discovers the bear that has been taking his food and later hunts it down. He kills it after a violent struggle, then cauterises his wound and returns to his winter refuge. The danger waiting for him is human as well as animal: Kalf and Erlendur arrange for a berserker to murder him. Kalf professes love for Lagertha and speaks of having children while keeping the plot against her son from her.
