Helga frees Floki, sending him into the woods while Kattegat's search party follows. Ubbe spots him hiding in a stream, and the escape ends with his capture. Ragnar has him bound inside a cave, where falling water repeatedly strikes his head. Aslaug defends Floki's killing of Athelstan, but Ragnar answers her with anger over loyalty and strikes her during their confrontation about what she has done.
Ragnar also learns how much Helga has suffered while trying to keep her family alive. He finds her digging in the frozen ground and helps when she explains that their daughter Angrboda has died. Floki remains confined and does not yet know of the loss. Away from Kattegat, Bjorn struggles to feed himself through the winter, checking empty traps before managing to catch fish in the isolated wilderness.
In England, Ecbert sends Aethelwulf to rescue Kwenthrith and her son from Mercian rebels. Aethelwulf fights his way into the tower while Kwenthrith resists her captors, and both mother and child survive. Ecbert encourages Judith to study religious manuscripts while their affair continues. In Paris, Rollo adopts Frankish clothes and a new haircut, drawing Gisla's laughter, but offers practical military advice: more ships and forts along the river to stop returning Vikings.
