Geralt and Ciri search the battlefield at Sodden, where Tissaia's grief leaves him believing Yennefer is dead. He decides to take the princess to Kaer Morhen, the witchers' winter home. On the road they stop at the house of Nivellen, an old acquaintance now trapped in a beast's body. His magic supplies comfort and food, but the abandoned village nearby and noises inside the house make Geralt doubt the welcome. Ciri meets Vereena, the woman Nivellen is hiding.
Vereena is a bruxa who has killed people in the village. Geralt finds the victims and returns ready to fight her, instructing Ciri to escape if necessary. The battle moves into the courtyard, where Vereena takes the girl hostage. Nivellen impales the creature he loves, and Geralt finishes the fight by beheading her. Her death breaks the curse, restoring Nivellen's human form. He admits that he knew about her victims and reveals that he was cursed after raping a priestess. Geralt and Ciri leave him behind.
Yennefer has survived the fire at Sodden, although she is Fringilla's prisoner. Fringilla hopes to return to Nilfgaard with something to offset her defeat, while Tissaia interrogates Cahir for information. An unseen force attacks Fringilla's party in the woods, killing the soldiers and leaving the two sorceresses facing another threat together.
