Geralt saves the merchant Yurga from ghouls among the dead, but a bite leaves him badly injured. Yurga carries him in his cart while the witcher drifts through memories and visions of his childhood. Geralt confronts the image of his mother, Visenna, about leaving him with Vesemir. His wish to reach someone who can help is tangled with the wound and the people he has lost. He is still travelling toward Ciri without knowing where she has found shelter.
At Sodden, Yennefer joins the mages and defenders trying to stop Nilfgaard's advance into the North. Their preparations delay the attackers, but Fringilla counters their magic and undermines the keep from within. Possessed defenders turn explosive supplies against their own side, and Yennefer is wounded. Tissaia finally tells her to release the chaos she has spent years learning to contain. Yennefer draws on her pain and unleashes fire across the battlefield. Afterwards, she is missing, leaving Tissaia calling for her among the destruction.
Ciri wakes near the bodies of the boys who attacked her and accepts the kindly woman's help. That woman is Yurga's wife, bringing the princess and Geralt to the same household by separate roads. Ciri runs into the woods as his cart arrives. They finally recognize and embrace one another there, and she asks him who Yennefer is.
