Valentina is badly burned when her clothing catches fire while she cooks for Tony. Elsewhere, Phil and Billy murder Angelo, Blundetto's close friend from prison. Tony sees that his cousin is behaving strangely without yet understanding why. He retreats to the Plaza Hotel, where Silvio's message eventually informs him of Angelo's death. Attempts to contact Blundetto fail, leaving Tony unable to locate him as the threat of retaliation grows more immediate.
Tony falls asleep and enters a long dream populated by dead associates and shifting identities. His father drives a car carrying men from his past. At a dinner with Finn's parents, familiar faces replace the guests and Tony's teeth fall out. He sees Blundetto shoot Phil, then flees a crowd blaming him. The dream finally brings him before his old football coach, who criticises his choices while Tony's gun fails and its ammunition melts.
He wakes in the hotel rather than resolving the confrontation with his coach. Christopher arrives with news of what Blundetto has actually done: Billy is dead and Phil has been wounded. The killing seen in Tony's dream was therefore not a literal account of the attack. Tony returns to bed and calls Carmela before dawn. He mentions the recurring coach dream, and their quiet conversation offers a moment of contact while the crisis remains unresolved.
