The Sopranos · Season 3 · Episode 1

Mr. Ruggerio's Neighborhood

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

The FBI obtains permission to plant a microphone in Tony's basement, where he believes the air conditioner prevents surveillance. Agents map the family's routines and enter the empty house to identify a suitable hiding place. They select a lamp and prepare a duplicate containing a transmitter. Their next entry is interrupted when the water heater bursts, flooding the basement and forcing them to abandon the installation until the damage is repaired.

Meadow begins college life with Caitlin, a roommate whose distress disrupts their shared room. Back in New Jersey, Patsy Parisi continues grieving for his twin brother, Philly. Suspecting Tony's involvement in the murder, Patsy arrives drunk outside the Soprano house and points a gun toward Tony through a window. He lowers it without firing, then urinates in the swimming pool. Watching FBI agents observe the incident while Tony remains unaware.

Tony later pressures Patsy to say he has put his brother's death behind him. The surveillance team finally replaces the basement lamp and begins listening. They hear Tony discussing wet work, but the conversation concerns plumbing rather than a killing. Tony and Carmela also talk about ordinary household matters, including laundry and dinner. The agents have secured their microphone, though its first conversations provide none of the incriminating material they hoped to record.
