Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Two years after Elizabeth Keen’s murder, the task force has disbanded and Red has disappeared. Dembe, now an FBI agent, is injured in an attack that kills his partner; Harold Cooper reunites the team and finds Red, who agrees to restore their criminal cases. The members have changed: Ressler left the Bureau and struggles with opioid addiction, Aram has built a security business, and Red’s empire has frayed under Marvin Gerard’s management. Cooper separately investigates the murder of his neighbour after he is framed and blackmailed. The two investigations gradually point toward the same hidden enemy.
As the season revisits Liz’s death through memories and new evidence, Red learns that Marvin engineered the events that led to her being killed and never intended to let her inherit the empire. Red wants revenge, while Cooper needs Marvin alive to clear his own name. Marvin is arrested, bargains with Panabaker to replace Red as the FBI’s criminal informant, and secures an immunity deal. Red confronts him at the courthouse but lets him choose his end; Marvin takes his own life after telling Wujing that Red is an FBI informant and supplying names. The task force gathers at Liz’s grave, Aram and pregnant Park take leave, and Wujing escapes to recruit enemies against Red.
