Will is taken to Hawkins Lab after the tunnel burn, but doctors find no burns on his body. His memory begins to fail: he recognises Joyce and Mike while forgetting other familiar people. Testing a piece of vine with heat makes him cry out again, confirming that his pain is linked to the growth beneath Hawkins. Owens resists colleagues who want to burn the tunnels despite the danger to Will. Will then identifies a place that the shadow creature seems to be hiding from him. A team of armed personnel enters the tunnels to investigate what they hope will be a weakness.
Steve and Dustin discover that Dart has escaped through the cellar wall. They lay a trail of meat to the junkyard and reinforce an abandoned bus with Lucas and Max. Waiting together, Lucas hears more about Max's unhappy home life and Billy's cruelty. The trap fails when several creatures arrive, forcing Steve back inside the bus. They attack the barricades before abruptly leaving for another destination. Nancy and Jonathan send copies of their recording to newspapers with Murray's help, then stop denying their feelings and spend the night together. At the laboratory, the tunnel team walks into an ambush. Mike realises that the shadow creature has used Will to guide them there. The soldiers are overwhelmed, and the creatures begin climbing into the building.
