Jonathan pulls Nancy back through the opening in the tree before it seals. Shaken by the creature she saw, she asks him to stay with her. Steve looks through her bedroom window and assumes they are sleeping together. Nancy and Jonathan decide that blood attracts the monster and buy supplies for a trap. Their plans stall when they find obscene graffiti about Nancy at the cinema. Steve's insults lead to a fight with Jonathan, who is arrested after striking a police officer trying to separate them. Hopper and Joyce visit Terry Ives, a woman who accused Brenner of taking her daughter. Terry cannot explain her story, so her sister Becky describes the experiments and the child Terry believes was stolen.
Mike and Dustin try to reconcile with Lucas, but he refuses to search for Eleven with them. He follows his compass to the laboratory and watches agents gathering there. Eleven, hungry and alone, steals frozen waffles from a shop. Memories of her time in the tank reveal that she touched the creature during an experiment and opened the gate. At the quarry, Troy holds a knife against Dustin and forces Mike to jump. Eleven catches Mike in midair, brings him back and drives the bullies away. She blames herself for releasing the monster; Mike tells her she saved him. An agent spots them returning home, and Brenner's team prepares to move.
