The MDR team wakes in a snowy wilderness with a television perched near a cliff. A recorded message from Milchick says their outies authorized a two-day Outdoor Retreat and Team-Building Occurrence. The group is expected to follow Lumon’s strange program: locate an appendix to Kier Eagan’s handbook in Scissor Cave, then retrace the founder’s journey. They set out through the woods, where distant figures resembling each of them appear among the trees.
Inside Scissor Cave, the team finds the text and learns that Kier had a twin brother, Dieter, who lived with him in the forest. Dylan works out that the strange figures may be their own doubles. The appendix includes a map to Woe’s Hollow, and the four follow it toward the next stage of the retreat. Along the way, the company’s founder lore becomes harder to separate from the innies’ own identities and from the controlled exercise Lumon has arranged.
At the campsite, Helly laughs at the account of Kier and Dieter, angering Milchick. Irving again presses her about the overtime contingency; after he storms off, Mark and Helly sleep together in her tent, where she admits she was ashamed of her outie. The next morning Irving confronts Helly at the waterfall and declares she is Helena. She confirms it by calling Milchick Seth and orders the Glasgow block removed. Lumon restores Helly, then fires Irving for trying to drown her.
